Gambling and Gaming:
Risks and Responsible Play

Gambling involves wagering money or possessions on an event with an uncertain outcome, aiming to gain more wealth or money. In Connecticut:

  • You must be 21 or older to participate in online and in-person casino gambling or sports wagering.

  • You must be 18 or older to participate in fantasy contests or purchase a lottery ticket.
     

Among Bolton High School students, 12.6% reported gambling at some point in their life and 7% reported gambling in the past month. Only 70% of students in grades 6 - 12 think gambling is harmful.

  • Off-track betting

  • Sports betting & fantasy sports

  • Charitable games

  • Online gambling

  • Stock market investments

  • Cryptocurrency trading

When Does Gambling Become a Problem

Financial Distress:
  • Unexplained disappearance of money

  • Missing household valuables

  • Persistent financial shortfalls despite steady income

  • Frequent borrowing or multiple outstanding loans

  • Secrecy about financial records or income

  • Unpaid bills or disconnection notices

  • Insufficient food or essentials at home
     

Mood & Behavioral Changes:
  • Deflection, rationalization, or minimization of gambling habits

  • Dishonest behavior

  • Decline in work performance

  • Signs of anxiety, agitation, or distress

  • Feelings of hopelessness, depression, or suicidal thoughts

  • Changes in sleep, eating, or sexual habits

  • Controlling or manipulative behaviors (e.g., threats, lies, or charm to influence others)

  • Defensive reactions when confronted about gambling
     

Important Fact: Among all forms of addiction, gambling is linked to the highest suicide rate.

Tips for Responsible Gambling

  • Set a plan before gambling.

  • Establish a time limit for sessions.

  • Determine a monetary limit.

  • Take breaks.

  • Avoid alcohol while gambling.

  • Learn the rules and odds before playing.

  • Never chase losses.

  • Only gamble when in a positive mindset.

Problem Gaming

Gaming involves playing electronic games on consoles, computers, tablets, phones, and similar devices.

 

Key Gaming Statistics:
  • 2.5 billion people worldwide engage in gaming.

  • The average gamer is 33 years old.

  • Ages 18-25 are most at risk for gaming-related issues.

  • Gamers are 54% male, 46% female.

  • 3-4% of gamers experience problematic gaming behaviors.
     

Similarities Between Gambling and Gaming
  • Extended play sessions that can disrupt daily life.

  • Daily login rewards that encourage habitual behavior.

  • Microtransactions where costs for upgrades or exclusive items escalate.

  • Loot boxes that provide random rewards, mimicking gambling behavior.
     

When is Gaming a Hobby vs. a Problem?

 

Gaming as a Hobby:
  • Enjoyed in moderation

  • No impact on work or school performance

  • Maintains other hobbies and interests

  • Played during free time

  • Able to take breaks

  • Follows a healthy sleep schedule
     

Problematic Gaming:
  • Prioritizing gaming over essential responsibilities

  • Skipping meals and exercise

  • Neglecting personal hygiene

  • Strained relationships with friends and family

  • Missing work or school due to gaming
